The current version of the International Classification of Sleep Disorders (ICSD), ICSD-3-TR, prepared by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, was published in 2023. Sleep disorders are classified under six main headings, the second being sleep-related breathing disorders. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), the most common sleep disorder, is examined under this heading. Due to its high prevalence and its serious effects on the cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, metabolic, neuropsychiatric, and urogenital systems, sleep-related breathing disorders constitute an important group of sleep disorders.
A medical history and physical examination are not sufficient for a definitive diagnosis of sleep-related breathing disorders. Sleep tests are necessary. Due to the limited availability of sleep centers and hence sleep test capacity, access to sleep tests is difficult worldwide, resulting in a significant number of undiagnosed patients. Because sleep-related breathing disorders have implications affecting many different disciplines, a multidisciplinary approach is required for their clinical evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment.
This book provides detailed information on the classification, pathophysiology, clinical findings, body system effects, and considerations during physical examinations of sleep-disordered breathing. The types of sleep tests required for diagnosis, the evaluation of sleep test data, and the importance of the sleep test report details are highlighted in this book. Following diagnosis, a global consensus has not been reached on tailored treatment of the individual patients. Given the lack of widely accepted algorithms, detailed information is provided to contribute to the literature on this topic.
Once a treatment decision is made, all available treatment options, including different surgical methods for different anatomical regions, are presented with original figures and/or photographs.
I would like to thank all my colleagues who wrote the chapters in this book for their meticulous work. I offer my best regards and hope that it will be helpful to all healthcare professionals in various fields of sleep medicine.
