The number of individuals aged 65 and over continues to significantly rise compared to the general population all over the world. The burden of chronic diseases increasing with age and the consequent polypharmacy constitute an important public health problem. Diseases especially affecting the cardiovascular, respiratory, central nervous, endocrine, gastrointestinal, urinary, and musculoskeletal systems and the eye are frequently encountered, as is the increasing prevalence of cancer. On the other hand, the impact of the aging organism on all of the systems in the body could alter pathophysiological processes and substantially modify the response to medications. Such differences are expected to be considered by physicians when managing pharmacotherapy in a geriatric patient.

This book titled ”Geriatric Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy” by Türkiye Klinikleri has been prepared in two parts. The first part focuses on how the aging organism can modify drug responses (pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic changes) and the principles of rational drug use, drug management, prescribing cascade, adverse drug reactions, potential risks of herbal products, therapeutic drug monitoring, as well as inappropriate drug use guidelines in the elderly population. In addition, several chapters are included for scholars who are interested in geriatric research: experimental animal models, pharmacoepidemiologic and clinical drug trials, and novel drugs for the elderly. The second part of the book consists of chapters that cover organ- or system-based geriatric pharmacotherapy, considering the critical aspects of the most prevalent conditions and their medications in the elderly in light of current literature. We believe that each chapter of the book provides pharmacologists, physicians, and healthcare professionals with concise ”pill” knowledge, and we hope that it will be a useful and up-to-date resource for drug use in the elderly.
