The neonatal period constitutes a unique phase fraught with substantial risks during the nascent stages of life. Challenges encountered during this critical timeframe can give rise to considerable morbidity and mortality, impacting the subsequent course of an individual’s life. Typically, issues arising from birth until discharge are meticulously monitored and addressed within neonatal intensive care units or specialized clinics. However, certain exceptional circumstances such as home births or deliveries en route, coupled with unforeseen emergencies post-hospital discharge, necessitate the immediate involvement of pediatric emergency departments. Hence, it is imperative to comprehend the specific reasons leading to the admission of this distinctive group to the emergency service and to execute prompt and effective interventions.
Within the pages of this book, our esteemed authors, each an expert in their respective fields, have scrutinized neonatal emergencies within pediatric emergency units, delving into various aspects guided by their clinical expertise and contemporary guidelines. The book comprehensively addresses emergency scenarios frequently encountered in newborns at the emergency service, presenting detailed discussions on their symptoms, diagnoses, and intervention methodologies. It is my sincere hope that this publication will illuminate the management of neonatal emergencies for all healthcare professionals, particularly those working in emergency services.
I extend my gratitude to all the contributing authors for their invaluable insights, and I trust that readers will derive maximum benefit from this resource. Additionally, I express my appreciation to the Türkiye Klinikleri team for their permission and support in bringing forth this book.
