Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are not merely localized issues affecting the temporomandibular joint and masticatory muscles; rather, they present a complex clinical picture requiring a multidisciplinary approach due to their wide-ranging effects, from headaches to postural dysfunctions. The primary aim of this book is to provide readers with a comprehensive and up-to-date resource, encompassing a broad spectrum from fundamental theoretical knowledge to clinical applications related to TMD.
Furthermore, while this topic is frequently addressed separately by different disciplines in the literature, it is unified in this book through an interdisciplinary perspective. The objective is to contribute to resolving uncertainties in diagnosis and treatment processes, strengthen clinical decision-making, and promote both intraand inter-professional knowledge sharing on TMD.
The book begins with a detailed exploration of the anatomical structure of the temporomandibular joint and masticatory muscles, and continues with discussions on the etiology, pathophysiology, clinical findings, and associated pathologies of TMD. The diagnosis section thoroughly examines patient history, physical examination findings, imaging techniques (MRI, CT, ultrasonography, etc.), and current classification criteria. Additionally, patient education is also covered.
Treatment approaches span a wide range—from conservative methods (physical therapy, exercises, splint therapy, pharmacological treatment, mobilization and manipulation principles) to invasive techniques (injection methods, surgical treatment principles).
One of the book’s most significant contributions is the consolidation of knowledge and experience from various disciplines under one roof in the field of TMD. It is intended for a broad group of healthcare professionals, including dentists, physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists, otolaryngologists, neurologists, orthopedists, maxillofacial surgeons, psychologists, and physiotherapists. In this regard, it serves as both an educational resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students and a reference guide for clinical practitioners.
Moreover, the chapters in the book have been updated with the latest developments in the literature, incorporate multidisciplinary practices, and are structured in a way that allows practical application. In this context, the work not only compiles existing knowledge but also offers an academic platform that can contribute to the development of the field.
It is expected that the book will address the knowledge gap in this field in Turkey, raise awareness about TMD, contribute to patient management, and promote interdisciplinary collaboration.
