In recent years, the increasing interest in aesthetic, comfortable, and personalized orthodontic treatment options has brought clear aligners to the forefront of our clinical practice. What began as an alternative solution for selected cases has now become a well-established and versatile approach, supported by continuous technological advancements and growing scientific evidence.
This comprehensive textbook, What We Know About Clear Aligners, has been designed to serve as a structured guide for researchers and interested clinicians seeking to deepen their understanding of aligner-based therapy.
We structured the book into three main sections:
Section 1 presents the fundamental principles of clear aligner therapy, including the evolution of aligner materials, the development and use of treatment planning software, and the key biomechanical concepts that guide successful case design and execution.
Section 2 explores treatment strategies based on different types of malocclusions—transverse, sagittal, and vertical—and addresses specific considerations for growing patients. It also emphasizes the importance of patient motivation and cooperation in achieving successful treatment outcomes.
Section 3 focuses on complex clinical scenarios and advanced treatment protocols, including extraction cases, the integration of orthognathic surgery, and the use of adjunctive mechanics. This section also offers practical suggestions, troubleshooting insights, and clinical tips for enhancing predictability in challenging cases.
To enhance the learning experience and better visualize digital planning, we’ve included fully documented clinical cases and dynamic ClinCheck® simulations in Chapters 5, 6, 7, 10, and 12. By scanning the QR codes embedded in these chapters, readers can directly view the treatment planning videos and follow each step of the aligner protocols in motion.
We hope this book will not only be a reference guide, but also a source of inspiration and encouragement for everyone who is part of the ever-evolving field of clear aligner therapy.
