ABSTRACT
Total abdominal hysterectomy (TAH) and subtotal (supracervical) hysterectomy are two important surgical approaches for managing uterine pathologies. TAH involves the complete removal of the uterus and cervix, while subtotal hysterectomy preserves the cervix by only removing the upper por- tion of the uterus. The choice of method depends on factors such as the patient’s health status, the surgeon’s experience, and uterine size. Subtotal hysterectomy may reduce surgical complications, but some studies indicate no significant difference in outcomes between the two methods. Additionally, patients undergoing subtotal hysterectomy require regular Pap smear screenings due to the risk of cervical cancer. In conclusion, explaining the advantages and disadvantages of treatment options in the selection of hysterectomy techniques facilitates a shared decision-making process between the patient and the doctor.
