ABSTRACT
Transgender women face unique challenges, including stigma, discrimination, and violence, which contribute to elevated rates of addiction and adverse health outcomes. This article explores the prevalence and drivers of addiction in transgender women, focusing on nicotine, alcohol, drug, and behavioral addictions. Nicotine and alcohol use are significantly higher in this population, often linked to coping with stress and marginalization. Illicit substance use, particularly methamphetamines and intravenous drugs, is associated with trauma, stigma, and risky sexual behaviors. Behavioral addictions, such as gambling and compulsive sexual behavior, also disproportionately affect transgender women. Current addiction treatments often fail to address the specific needs of transgender individuals, emphasizing the need for inclusive, gender-sensitive care. Tailored interventions and safe treatment environments are essential to improving outcomes and reducing health disparities in this underserved group.
