ABSTRACT
The amplitude integrated EEG is a bedside method that allows monitoring the electrocortical activity in neonatal intensive care units by processing the signals obtained with two or four electrodes. Today, it has been widely used to diagnose and follow-up of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, during the treatment of therapeutic hypothermia, to detect seizure activity and its response to treatment. The amplitude integrated EEG provides valuable information on the longterm neurodevelopmental prognosis of both mature and premature neonates. Records should be evaluated on the basis of parameters such as background pattern, presence of sleep-wake cycle and seizure activity. However, it is recommended that the findings should be supported by conventional EEG recordings if the diagnosis is suspected due to fewer electrodes and compressed recording compared to conventional EEG. In this paper, the role of aEEG in the follow-up of newborn and the evaluation principles of the recordings were discussed.
