ABSTRACT
Cardiomyopathy is defined as a myocardial disease characterized by structural and functional abnormalities of the heart muscle without coronary artery disease, hypertension, valvular diseases, or congenital heart diseases. Primary cardiomyopathy refers to structural and functional disorders of the heart muscle that develop independently of other diseases. Primary cardiomyopathies can be classified phenotypically into hypertrophic, dilated cardiomyopathy, non-dilated left ventricular cardiomyopathy, arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia, and restrictive cardiomyopathy. Cardiac MRI (CMR), with its excellent spatial and temporal resolution, allows for simultaneous morphological and functional evaluation, making it the gold standard imaging method in the diagnosis of cardiomyopathies. CMR plays an important role in the diagnosis, treatment selection, and follow-up of cardiomyopathies. The pattern of myocardial enhancement in late gadolinium images can provide guidance regarding possible etiology and the extent of enhancement is significant for its association with poor prognostic factors such as arrhythmia and cardiac failure.
