ABSTRACT
Pulmonary embolism is an emergency condition where a thrombus originating from lower extremity veins travels to pulmonary vessels, causing vascular obstruction and sudden death. It is often diagnosed late due to its insidious progression without any clinical symptoms. Risk factors for pulmonary embolism include obesity, advanced age, prolonged bed rest, surgery, malignant tumors, and trauma. Nurses who spend the most time with and care for patients are the primary healthcare professionals who can detect pulmonary embolism. Effective nursing care and integration of treatment plans can reduce the risk factors and help prevent patients from developing pulmonary embolism. Nurses should be knowledgeable of the symptoms of pulmonary embolism, intervene early, monitor for bleeding, and protect patients from trauma such as falls or collisions. Sharing the symptoms detected through patient monitoring with the healthcare team can improve the speed and quality of treatment/care, thus increasing patients’ survival rates and quality of life.
