ABSTRACT
Mastocytosis is defined by the excessive proliferation and accumulation of mast cells in organs such as the skin, liver, spleen, lymph nodes, gastrointestinal tract, and bone marrow. Cutaneous mastocytosis, which is only presented with skin findings, is usually seen in childhood. The classification of masto- cytosis is crucial, as CM generally has a favorable prognosis, while the prognosis for systemic masto- cytosis can vary widely. Generally, prognosis is good in children and the disease tends to resolve with age. Identifying the type of mastocytosis is crucial for forecasting the disease’s clinical progression and determining the prognosis. Non-advanced mastocytosis includes cutaneous mastocytosis, indolent sys- temic mastocytosis, and smoldering systemic mastocytosis, all of which generally have a stable course and favorable prognosis. Advanced systemic mastocytosis, including aggressive systemic mastocy- tosis, mastocytosis with a hematological neoplasm, and mast cell leukemia, is associated with a poor prognosis. Understanding these differences in biology and prognosis is key for proper management.
