ABSTRACT
Uterine myomas or myoma uteri (uterine leiomyomas) are the most common female pelvic neoplasms. They are benign tumors with monoclonal proliferation of smooth muscle and fibroblast cells of myometrium. They usually affect women in reproductive age. The pathological mechanisms causing leiomyoma development include some genetic factors and a hyperestrogenic environment. Other hyperestrogenic diseases like endometriosis, adenomyosis, and endometrial hyperplasia share some common molecular and genetic pathways with uterine leiomyomas and they commonly co-exist with uterine myomas. Subserosal growing uterine miyomas, especially myomas with cystic degeneration can mimic adnexal masses and cause difficulty in diagnosis. Patients with uterine leiomyomas should be evaluated and counseled extensively with the aspect that these conditions frequently accompany uterine leiomyomas.
