ABSTRACT
Atrial septal defects (ASD) are one of the most common congenital heart diseases in adults. Another important condition, patent foramen ovale (PFO), is found in up to 25% of the population. It is important to diagnose these diseases. There is a wide spectrum of clinical presentations, with right heart failure and severe pulmonary vascular disease in undiagnosed asymptomatic individuals. After ASD and PFO are diagnosed, they should be closed with appropriate indications. Surgery or wig closure is an option, especially rather than medical treatment. ASD and PFO can be closed surgically. In addition to surgical treatment, short-term and long-term complications may occur in lesions closed with devices. Our current knowledge about these complications and their rates is limited. In this section, our aim will be to examine the complications that may arise from ASD and PFO closure and to discuss appropriate treatment modalities.
