ABSTRACT
The world is aging. The incidence of cancer and cancer-related mortality increase with age. Sixty percent of all cancers and 70% of cancer mortality are found above 65 years of age. Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) is defined as a multidimensional, interdisciplinary diagnostic process that focuses on an identifying the medical, psychological and functional state of older adults, developing a coordinated and integrated plan for long-term follow-up and treatment. Although CGA appears to be a diagnostic evaluation, it also includes patient management and follow-up. Therefore, it has become a ‘Technology of Geriatrics’. CGA provides multi-dimensional evaluations of patients such as functional status, comorbidities, cognitive, psychological and nutritional status, polypharmacy and frailty. It facilitates the selection of appropriate patients for oncologic surgery and medical treatments and predicts possible side effects and complication risk. Foreseeing the benefits and risks of treatment will play an important role in the critical decision of the physician and the patients.
