ABSTRACT
The anterior chamber, the space between the cornea and the iris-lens diaphragm, undergoes a complex developmental process that begins in the first months of gestation and continues until the first year of life. Neural crest cells and mesodermal cells are involved in this process. This process can be disrupted, leading to congenital eye conditions known as ”Anterior segment dysgenesis”. These conditions include congenital glaucoma, Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome, and Peters anomaly. Congenital glaucoma results from trabecular dysgenesis and requires early intervention to prevent optic nerve, corneal and other ocular tissues damage. Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome is characterized by anterior chamber angle, iris and corneal abnormalities and systemic anomalies, often linked to genetic mutations. Peter’s anomaly involves central corneal defects and may lead to glaucoma. Treatment options range from medical management to surgical interventions, depending on the severity of the condition, with the goal of preserving vision and ocular health.
