ABSTRACT
Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) constitutes an oral health challenge affecting numerous individuals globally. MIH is defined as a developmental enamel defect characterised by hypomineralised enamel areas in one to four permanent first molars, usually caused by a systemic etiology. The clinical presentation of MIH may vary between individuals and can also exhibit heterogeneity among affected teeth within the same patient. MIH may resemble other developmental enamel anomalies such as caries lesions, dental fluorosis, enamel hypoplasia and amelogenesis imperfecta in terms of morphological features and colour changes. Therefore, the differential diagnosis process should be carried out carefully. An accurate and timely diagnosis of MIH plays an important role in reducing clinical complications such as inflammatory processes, pain and aesthetic problems that may progress to the dental pulp. It also contributes to improving the long-term oral health of patients by increasing the effectiveness of early preventive and restorative treatment approaches.
