ABSTRACT
Plantar fasciitis and the associated bone formation, referred to as the ”plantar heel spur” or ”epin calcanei”, comprise a frequent cause of pain in the inferior heel. Painful heel spur syndrome (PHSS) constitutes a major health concern, and plantar fasciitis is included among the most frequent foot disorders. Patients with PHSS may suffer from stinging and severe heel pain which may lead to gait and mobility disturbances along with deterioration in quality of life. Over a century after its first description, several therapeutic modalities have been used for management of painful heel spur and plantar fasciitis. RT has been typically considered as a last resort treatment due to concerns about adverse effects of irradiation such as carcinogenesis. However, there is accumulating evidence suggesting the utility of low dose irradiation for management of heel spur and plantar fasciitis. Within this context, RT may be considered as a viable therapeutic approach particularly when other treatments fail to achieve pain relief.
