ABSTRACT
Erythroplakia are red lesions on the oral mucosa and other mucosal surfaces that have no known cause or cannot be classified into a specific lesion group, such as inflammatory erythema and red lesions caused by vascular anomalies. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines erythroplakia as red plaque-like lesions on the oral mucosa that do not correspond to any clinically or pathologically known entity. Oral erythroplakia has a very low incidence compared to leukoplakia. Nevertheless, it ranks second in frequency among precancerous lesions and is considered the most likely lesion to undergo malignant transformation. The most common sites of erythroplakia are the soft palate, dorsum of the tongue, floor of the mouth and tonsils. These lesions are usually asymptomatic and unilocular. Because of the high rate of malignant transformation, erythroplakia requires careful evaluation for accurate diagnosis and treatment. Early diagnosis of erythroplakia is critical for the prevention of oral cancers.
