ABSTRACT
Although plant-based feeds are integral components of poultry diets, they bring certain components of cell wall that continue to be indigestible in poultry due to the lack of enzymes. These components, often called fiber, contain soluble and insoluble non-starch polysaccharides that may impact the digestion, and consequently the growth of broiler chickens. Hemicellulose is a complex entity composed of various non-starch polysaccharides including xylans that may significantly affect the digestion and performance of poultry. Cellulose is an insoluble NSP that is a structural polysaccharide of the plant cell wall. Digestion of xylans and cellulose can be achieved by exogenous supplementation of xylanase and cellulase enzymes. This chapter review the xylanase and cellulase with respect to the xylans and cellulose contents of feeds.
