ABSTRACT
Microplastics, which have become a public health problem in recent years, are included in many materials used in restorative, prosthetic, orthodontic, periodontal treatment and maxillofacial surgery. Oral hygiene products such as toothpastes, toothbrushes, floss and mouthwashes expose the oral mucosa to plastic polymers and microplastic particles formed as a result of the breakdown of these polymers by mechanical forces.Toothpaste and composite restorative materials are the primary materials contributing to microplastic pollution of the environment. It is known that microplastics affect many mechanisms of the body and can cause local or systemic inflammatory responses. While long-term use of toothpastes containing microplastics may cause abrasion enamel and dentin, the accumulation of microplastics in the gingival sulcus over time may cause inflammation and lead to the development of periodontal disease. The aim of this review is to investigate microplastics in materials used in dental practice. The sources that cause microplastic release in dentistry should be recognized and approaches to reduce their harmful effects should be developed.
