ABSTRACT
Over the last few decades, with the innovations in antenatal and neonatal care, medical care in neonatal intensive care units (NICU) has improved, resulting in increased survival rates of smaller infants. To provide the best possible conditions for NICU graduates, nearly continuous nurturing human interactions, bonding and attachment between parents and the infant is vital. Family centered care (FCC) was introduced to place families at the center of the decision-making and caregiving procedures for their infants. The development of FCC models has gone a long way toward supporting the parent-infant closeness, but still the components of a neonatal FCC model are not precisely defined and there are variations within and between countries. The present review summarizes different FCC concepts, evidence supporting FCC and implementation of FCC in NICUs even during pandemics.
