ABSTRACT

Uterine leiomyomas are the most common pelvic tumors in women. Many fibroids are asymptomatic and discovered incidentally, when symptomatic, one of the most important symptoms is abnormal uterine bleeding. The Menstrual Disorders Group of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) has developed the PALM-COEIN classification system for the causes of abnormal uterine bleeding in the reproductive years. Uterine fibroids are considered a separate category in this system. The FIGO classification system is intended to help both clinicians and researchers better cat- egorize causes of bleeding and plan treatments. This section of the book describes the FIGO subclas- sification of leiomyomas.
