ABSTRACT

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) of the duodenum and ampulla vateri make up about 5% of all gastrointestinal neuroendocrine neoplasms. These tumors present unique challenges in diagnosis and treatment. While sharing some characteristics with periampullary adenocarcinoma, they show distinct biological behaviors that require specific management approaches. Medical understanding of these rare tumors has advanced considerably in the last decade, particularly regarding their molecular characteristics and treatment options. The periampullary region’s complex anatomy, combined with these neuroendocrine tumors’ diverse presentation patterns, needs a complete management strategy. In this piece, we will take a closer look at the pathophysiology, classification, diagnostic approaches, and treatment options available for duodenal and ampullary NETs. Our discussion includes evidence-based guidelines to ensure optimal patient care.
