Bu bölüm, halitozis kavramını, halitozisin mikrobiyolojik yönlerini, çevre koşullarına etkisini, halitozise sebep olan bileşikleri ve dental patolojilerle ilişkisini biyokimyasal açıdan ele almaktadır. Halitozis biyolojik açıdan olduğu kadar, sosyal açıdan da öneme sahip patolojilerden biridir. Fizyolojik ve psikolojik yönden tam bir iyilik hâli olarak tanımlanan sağlık kavramı kapsamında iletişimi ve psikolojik sağlığı da etkileyen halitozis, teşhis ve tedavide multidisipliner bir yaklaşıma ihtiyaç duyar. Halitozise sebep olan bileşiklerin kimyasal yapılarının ve özelliklerinin bilinmesi daha efektif teşhis yöntemlerinin geliştirilmesi ve erken tanı için gerekli bilimsel altyapıyı sağlayabilir. Halitozisin Biyokimyası bölümü de bu özelliklerin önemini vurgulamakta ve etyolojik sebeplerin altını çizerek diş hekiminin halitozis karşısındaki tutumunu daha etkin hâle getirmeyi amaçlamaktadır.
