ABSTRACT

Acute liver failure is a critical medical condition characterized by hepatic encephalopathy and coagulopathy in a patient with no previous liver disease and can lead to severe morbidity and mortality. Acute on chronic liver failure describes the decompensation of preexisting chronic liver disease due to various causes. Decompensation can rapidly progress to multiple organ failure in the absence of appropriate followup and treatment. Clinical course and prognosis vary according to the etiology of the disease and are also crucial in terms of treatment plans. Depending on the etiology, antivirals, antidotes, or removal of toxins from the body are at the forefront, while termination of pregnancy may be required in pregnant patients. Although liver failure is considered reversible, the prognosis is poor if left untreated. Therefore, supportive treatment is of critical importance, and management of organ dysfunctions and complications should be performed without delay under intensive care conditions. For patients who do not respond to treatment, it is vital to determine the need for transplantation and transfer to the appropriate center. Largescale studies with more patients are needed to develop artificial support and liver devices and assess their efficacy.
