ABSTRACT
The serum magnesium level is regulated by the balance of absorption from the intestines and excretion from the kidneys. The increase in plasma magnesium level after the disruption of the balance is called hypermagnesemia. It rarely occurs in the emergency room. However, this diagnosis should be considered especially in patients with chronic renal failure using oral laxatives and enema, and in patients who are administered intravenous magnesium for preeclampsia-eclampsia. It should be considered in cases of neurological inhibition such as general body numbness, decrease in deep tendon reflexes and flaccid quadriplegia, negative cardiac findings such as hypotension, bradycardia, complete heart block and hypocalcemia. Treatment is usually provided by reducing magnesium intake, intravenous hydration and the use of loop diuretics. However, in special patient groups with very high serum magnesium levels and severe neurological and cardiac symptoms, hemodialysis should be considered in the early period to reduce magnesium levels to normal limits.
