ABSTRACT
Hypomagnesemia refers to a serum magnesium value below 1.7 mg/dl. Hypomagnesemia is obderved in 12% of hospitalized patients. Since magnesium is involved in the metabolism of other electrolytes, hormones and enzymatic reactions, its deficiency often produces non-specific symptoms. Therefore, it is a diagnosis that should be considered especially in patients with hypomagnesemia risk factors such as chronic diarrhea and proton pump inhibitor and unexplained hypocalcemia, convulsions, seizures, weakness, ventricular arrhythmia. Magnesium deficiency may be due to a decrease in intake and an increase in excretion. Chronic diarrhea, alcoholism, nutrition after prolonged fasting, diabetic ketoacidosis treatment are significant causes of hypomagnesia. Diagnosis and initiation of treatment by requesting serum magnesium value in patients with suspected magnesium deficiency is of utmost importance to reduce mortality and morbidity, especially in malignant ventricular arrhythmias (for instance; torsades de pointes).
