ABSTRACT
The clinical condition that progresses with the slowing down of cell metabolic processes after the deficiency of thyroid hormones is called hypothyroidism. It is more common in elderly and female patients. It is subdivided into primary, secondary and subclinical hypothyroidism. Clinical suspicion is important to make the diagnosis, as the patient usually presents with non-specific symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain and depression. Serum TSH level, free T4 and T3 levels, and cortisol level are requested primarily to clarify the etiology. The aim of treatment after diagnosis is to relieve the patient’s symptoms and lower the serum TSH level. In this regard, patients should be advised to start oral levothyroxine in the emergency department and to seek advice from the endocrinology department for followup.
