ABSTRACT
Facial nerve (FN) injury is a very devastating complication in neurologic and neurotologic surgery that obliterates the patient’s quality of life. In vestibular schwannoma surgery, which is a prototype of high-facial nerve injury risk procedures, reported rates of FN deficits are between 15-51% even resections were not total. Starting from that point, the risk reducing methods and modalities seem to be continuing to gain importance day by day. Although the title suggests only the concept of ‘monitorization’, this chapter will not address only the FN monitorization but also the ‘mapping’ of the FN along with other available neurophysiological tests, which are intraoperatively for preventing FN injury or predicting postoperative deficits.
