ABSTRACT
Tinea unguinum is a chronic fungal infection that is difficult to treat. Oral and topical antifungals restrict treatment due to their side effects and usage difficulties. In recent years, many laser types have started to be used in the treatment of tinea unguinum. Although the rates of mycological cure, clinical cure, and full cure are lower than conventional treatments, the use of lasers is generally accepted as they provide temporary clean nail growth. Nd: YAG lasers are the most commonly used lasers in the treatment of tinea unguinum. Lasers damage the fungal structure with photothermal effect or reactive oxygen derivatives released. Since these devices are manufactured by different companies, a standard protocol has not been established yet in determining the effective dose, pulse interval, frequency and pulse sizes, session durations and frequencies. It has been reported that the side effects of lasers in the treatment of tinea unguinum are less, and when the application is combined with oral and topical treatments, treatment success rates increase. There is still a need for placebo-controlled randomized studies involving a large number of patients on this topic.
