ABSTRACT

Heart failure is defined as a chronic clinical syndrome associated with impaired contractile or relaxation function of the heart, which occurs when the heart muscle is unable to adequately supply the blood flow required by the body. Patients who experience frequent hospitalisations for heart failure usually have a poor prognosis. Patients diagnosed with heart failure have a mortality rate of approximately 40% over the next 5 years, whereas patients with advanced heart failure have a survival rate of 50%. Nowadays, in the light of increasing knowledge about the pathophysiological mechanisms of heart failure and data obtained from clinical studies, significant progress has been made in the management of the disease. In addition, advances in imaging modalities facilitate definitive diagnosis and comprehensive investigation of the underlying aetiology, enabling the development of more appropriate therapeutic approaches.
