ABSTRACT
The nail unit is a complex structure consisting of different neighboring anatomical and histological structures such as nail plate, proximal and lateral nail folds, eponchymium, hyponchymium, nail matrix, nail bed and distal phalanx. Due to this feature of the nail unit, the tumors seen here may represent very different clinical features compared to tumors seen in other skin areas. Since the presence of the nail plate prevents the direct viewing of the subungual tumors, it often causes limitations in the evaluation of the lesions with the naked eye or dermoscopic examination. Due to similar reasons, various differences and difficulties may be encountered in the clinical differential diagnosis, biopsy sampling, histopathological features and treatments of tumors seen here, and diagnosis and treatment delays may occur. This review aims to summarize the diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumors of the nail unit, a specialized anatomical structure, in the light of current information.
