ABSTRACT
The facial nerve has a long, 3-dimensional course in the temporal bone. During extensive jugular paraganlioma surgery, there is a risk of damage to the nerve, particularly due to rerouting procedure. While in case of large tumors rerouting is mostly inevitable; short rerouting or non-rerouting, if possible, is more desirable in means of protecting the facial nerve function.
