ABSTRACT

Migration, an intrinsic aspect of human history, presents a multifaceted tableau of challenges and opportunities. Within this complex phenomenon lies a domain ripe for scientific inquiry -the nexus of migration and psychopathology. While migration can yield positive outcomes in the guises of developmental migration and posttraumatic growth, it is essential to acknowledge that migration, in its essence, embodies a multi-dimensional traumatic process before, during, and after its emergence. This traumatic core underscores a range of prevalent mental disorders, notably posttraumatic stress disorder, dissociative disorders, depression, and anxiety disorders, frequently observed in migrant populations, resulting from the detrimental impacts of migration-related traumatic experiences on various facets of an individual’s integrated physical, social, and psychological self. The primary objective of this chapter is to analyze and discuss the intersection of migration and psychopathology through the perspectives of dissoanalysis and modern psychotraumatology. By elucidating their core principles and interrelationships, this chapter aims to offer insights into the intricate dynamics between migration experiences and mental health outcomes.
