ABSTRACT
Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a developmental defect of enamel and is typically characterized by white, yellow, or brown opacities affecting one or more first permanent molars, and sometimes incisors. Numerous studies investigating the impact of MIH on caries prevalence have confirmed a positive relationship between these two conditions. Hypomineralized enamel is more porous and less resistant to masticatory forces compared to healthy enamel, which can lead to post-eruptive enamel breakdown. Consequently, plaque accumulation increases, facilitating the development of carious lesions. Furthermore, MIH-affected teeth exhibit heightened sensitivity to temperature changes and mechanical stimuli, causing pain even during toothbrushing. This sensitivity complicates both oral hygiene maintenance and treatment compliance. For these reasons, MIH is recognized as a significant risk factor for caries. Therefore, children with MIH, regardless of their socioeconomic status, should be considered at high risk for caries and provided with comprehensive preventive measures to minimize caries development.
