ABSTRACT
Due to complexity and rather limited morphological findings of the nail unit, clinical hints are usually not sufficient and a dermatopathological examination is needed to make the correct diagnosis in nail unit disorders. However dermatologists rarely perform nail unit biopsies as they think it is difficult and have high risk of complications. A thorough understanding of the nail unit anatomy, correct decision of the biopsy site and using the correct technique makes the nail unit biopsy one of the best and safe methods. Nail unit biopsy indications, techniques and prerequisites for a succesful nail biopsy are discussed in this article.
