ABSTRACT
The main indication for mechanical ventilation (MV) applied in intensive care units is mostly due to acute respiratory failure and its symptoms. Worldwide, one-third of patients hospitalized to intensive care units require MV treatment. Access to lower airways through tracheostomy or endotracheal tubes have constituted a major improvement in managing respiratory distress of the patients. Although invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) is a life-saving procedure for the patient, it can also cause life-threatening complications. Prolonged MV increases mortality, lengthens hospital stay and causes an increase in health care costs due to its complications. IMV and non-invasive mechanical ventilation (NIMV) applications used in acute respiratory failure were mentioned in this section.
