ABSTRACT
Monitoring vital signs such as heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, and body temperature is indispensable in the follow-up of critically ill children. Traditional methods in these follow-ups gener- ally use devices that come into contact with the patient, such as probes or cuffs. These methods carry difficulties such as patient discomfort, skin irritation and infection risks. New methods are being de- veloped for monitoring non-contact vital signs. These methods provide accurate, real-time monitoring without physical contact. Vital sign monitoring can be performed without contacting the patient, espe- cially using new technological methods such as photoplethysmography, thermal imaging, ultrasound, radar and artificial intelligence. This section covers the principles and applications of non-contact vital sign monitoring. It emphasizes its benefits in various environments such as neonatal, pediatric inten- sive care units, operating rooms, emergency services and remote home monitoring. Non-contact vital sign monitoring ensures patient comfort, preserves skin integrity and reduces infection risks. Emerging innovations such as multimodal systems and artificial intelligence offer a safer, more efficient, pa- tient-centred approach to monitoring vital signs in clinical and non-clinical settings.
