ABSTRACT
Arterial carbon dioxide pressure is an important indicator of respiratory function in critically ill pa- tients. Arterial blood gas analysis is the traditional and currently used standard method for monitoring arterial carbon dioxide pressure; however, the continuous use of this invasive technique is limited. Non-invasive techniques, particularly capnometry and transcutaneous carbon dioxide monitoring, play a crucial role, especially in pediatric intensive care settings. Capnometry provides real-time measure- ment of end-tidal carbon dioxide pressure, which is the best indicator of ventilation efficiency. Ad- ditionally, transcutaneous carbon dioxide monitoring estimates arterial carbon dioxide levels using transcutaneous sensors. These methods reduce the need for invasive sample collection and enable continuous monitoring. However, technical and physiological factors may affect the accuracy of these methods. This review discusses the principles, applications, and limitations of non-invasive carbon dioxide monitoring in critically ill children, with a focus on the unique challenges faced in the pediatric population.
