ABSTRACT
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an uncontrolled inflammation of the intestinal mucosa, including ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, which is idiopathic, chronic, with periods of relapse (exacerbation) and remission (recovery). In adults and older patients, symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, weight loss and frequent urge to use the toilet adversely affect the patient’s professional life and labor productivity and reduce the quality of life in periods when the disease is not under full control. For this reason, nurses should provide comprehensive training to patient’s education on regular medical check-ups, maintaining a healthy and balanced diet, taking regular medication, exercising and developing plans to reduce stress. In addition, patients should receive interventions for nursing diagnoses pain, diarrhea, malnutrition, anxiety, ineffective health management, ineffective individual coping, lack of information, sexual dysfunction, risk of impaired skin integrity, fatigue, impaired body image, risk of fluid volume deficiency, risk of bleeding.
