Ağız dokularının biyokimyasında, ekstraselüler matriks, hücrelerarası sinyal iletiminden doku yenilenmesine kadar bir dizi kritik süreçte merkezi bir rol oynayarak, dokuların yapısal bütünlüğünü ve işlevselliğini sürdürmekte önemli bir yere sahiptir.
Ekstraselüler matriks (ECM), hücre dışı kompartmanda bulunan ve çeşitli biyomolekül-lerden meydana gelen dinamik bir yapıdır. Hücrelerarası iletişimde, hücre adezyonunda ve hücre davranışlarının modülasyonunda önemli roller üstlenir. Kolajen, elastin, fbronektin gibi bir dizi protein, bu fonksiyonların yerine getirilmesinde kritik öneme sahiptir. Bu bö-lüm, oral dokularda ECM’nin detaylı yapısını, içerdiği çeşitli proteinleri ve bu proteinlerin fonksiyonlarını ayrıntılı şekilde incelerken kemik ve diş gibi kalsifye dokulardaki biyolojik ve yapısal önemine de odaklanır. Ayrıca bu dokularda ECM’nin özgün yapısı ve kompozis-yonunun, kemik ve dişin yapısal özellikleri ve işlevleri üzerinde nasıl belirleyici olduğunu kapsamlı bir şekilde inceler. Bu bilgiler, ECM’nin biyolojik sistemlerde kilit bir etkisi oldu-ğunun anlaşılmasına yardımcı olacaktır.
