ABSTRACT
Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a systemic developmental enamel defect affecting up to four first permanent molars, either involving or not involving the incisors. It is characterized by distinct yellow, white or brown opacities on the affected teeth. This opacity is associated with low-quality enamel of typical thickness but not in a fully mineralized state. The symptoms of MIH are often difficult to notice in the early stages, and failure to detect it over time can cause serious damage to the teeth. Subsequent fracture of the affected teeth, making them vulnerable to tooth decay and subsequent deterioration are extremely common. Therefore, MIH presents a dental issue with clinical, financial, and psychological consequences. Planned extraction of at-risk teeth is an alternative treatment strategy to complex restorative procedures. In the treatment of children affected by MIH, a multidisciplinary treatment plan should be created, considering not only the dental but also the general health status. Orthodontists play an extremely important role in preventing complications that may arise during the application of different treatment protocols, formulating successful treatment plans for people impacted by MIH, and enhancing oral health and overall well-being.
