ABSTRACT

  • Outpatient procedures, defined by same-day discharge, have grown significantly due to advancements in minimally invasive surgical techniques and anesthetic methods.
  • Outpatient surgery provides numerous advantages, such as reduced hospital costs, lower risks of nosocomial infections, and improved patient satisfaction.
  • Successful outcomes rely on meticulous planning, including patient selection, anesthetic techniques, and postoperative management.
  • Preoperative anesthetic assessment is a critical step in identifying potential risks and optimizing patient readiness.
  • Intraoperative anesthetic management focuses on the safety and efficiency of techniques, including general anesthesia with short-acting agents, regional anesthesia for reduced postoperative complications of general anesthesia, and monitored anesthesia care (MAC) for enhanced recovery times.
  • Postoperative care is integral element to patient satisfaction and timely discharge.
  • Strategies regarding pain management, PONV prevention, and discharge criteria based on scoring systems such as PADSS should be determined for each institution and carefully implemented.
  • Another issue is ensuring that patients receive the necessary written and verbal instructions at the time of discharge.
  • In conclusion, the success of outpatient anesthesia depends on careful planning, the selection of appropriate anesthetic techniques, and effective postoperative care.
