ABSTRACT
The aesthetic expectations and individualized treatment needs in orthodontics are addressed by clear aligner treatments, particularly with recent technological advancements. Digital workflows, computer-aided design, and computer-aided manufacturing have enabled the mass production of clear aligners. However, creating a single material that encompasses all the desired properties for clear aligners is challenging. Thus, when selecting a material, several factors must be considered, including mechanical durability, responsiveness to intraoral conditions, biocompatibility, potential release of harmful substances, and the ability to maintain tooth movement. The physical, chemical, optical, and mechanical properties of the materials used in clear aligners have been enhanced through the application of polymer blends, resulting in improved clinical performance. Concurrently, the clinical application of directly three-dimensional printed clear aligners is rising in tandem with innovations in production methods. Moreover, shape memory polymers offer the potential for more efficient time management in treatment. Lastly, regulations are necessary to manage the waste and toxic substances produced to ensure the sustainability of these treatments.
