ABSTRACT
Recently, the importance of microbiota profile in neurodegenerative diseases has been rapidly increasing. In this section, the relationship between Parkinson’s Disease and microbiome, motor and nonmotor symptoms, cognitive effects and specifically the relationship between memory and gut microbiome are discussed. The brain and gut axis communicate through various pathways such as neuroendocrine pathways and the immune system. Changes in the intestinal profile can affect the brain in many ways. Especially shortchain fatty acids (SCFA) produced by bacterial fermentation of fibrous foods have many important functions such as gastrointestinal health, metabolic hormone modulation, BDNF expression, and inhibition of proinflammatory cytokines, emphasizing the importance of SCFAproducing bacteria. Therefore, it is likely that SCFAs contribute directly or indirectly to cognitive functions such as memory. A decrease in the abundance of SCFAproducing bacteria is generally observed in Parkinson’s Disease.
