ABSTRACT

The patch test is an epicutaneous test that shows the presence in tissue of specific T lymphocytes against the contact allergen. It can be used in many indications, especially eczematous allergic contact dermatitis. Standardized allergens can be supplied and tested as standard series or as cosmetic, fragrance, pharmaceutical, and occupational series. In addition, patch tests can be performed with substances with which individuals come into contact in their daily lives, jobs, or hobbies. Patch testing is evaluated according to International Contact Dermatitis Research Group (ICDRG) criteria. Negative, irritant, doubtful positive, or positive reactions should be carefully evaluated. Interpreting positive reactions in the light of patient histories and clinical findings and evaluating their compatibility with the clinical manifestation is the most important step in patch testing.
