ABSTRACT
Tracheostomy is frequently performed in intensive care units to ensure airway safety, to increase the comfort of patients in need of prolonged mechanical ventilation, and to contribute to the reduction of mortality and morbidity rates by shortening the length of stay in intensive care units. In recent decades, percutaneous tracheostomy has been preferred more than surgical (open) tracheostomy by intensive care clinicians due to its short application time, bedside applicability and low risk of perioperative wound infection. In this chapter, the types, advantages, indications and contraindications of percutaneous tracheostomy will be discusses.
