Psychooncology in Geriatric Cancer Patients: Depression and Demoralization

ABSTRACT
Percentage of elderly patients among total cancer patients in constantly increasing. Elderly people are more prepared for the bad news about their health and they are more experienced. On the other hand, they experience other negative circumstances related to their age. One of the most common psychiatric disorders observed in geriatric cancer patients is depression. Normal psychological reactions of geriatric cancer patients, communication issues with the elderly, risk factors for depression and suicide, depression types and diagnostic criteria, critical points in diagnosing depression in the elderly, the medical conditions which should be considered in the differential diagnosis of depression and treatment of depression in the elderly are reviewed in this paper. Another condition which could be confused with depression is demoralization. It is described as a state of hopelessness, loss of meaning and existential distress recognizable in palliative care settings. Diagnostic criteria and treatment recommendations for demoralization were described.
