ABSTRACT
Rheumatoid arthritis is a condition characterized by systemic inflammation and polyarthritis. It especially affects the distal joints, resulting in a significant decline in the patient’s quality of life. Radiotherapy is a long-standing therapeutic method that has been utilized in the management of non-cancerous conditions. Especially the anti-inflammatory effects of low-dose radiotherapy are wellestablished. Radiotherapy in rheumatoid arthritis was studied with total lymphoid irradiation, especially in the 1980s, and although effective results were obtained, it was abandoned due to side effects and concerns about secondary malignancy. Radiotherapy administered to the afflicted joint in rheumatoid arthritis yielded unfavorable outcomes. However, the number of studies is quite limited. This review will explore the historical and current use of radiation in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
