Shopping Addiction

ABSTRACT

Shopping addiction is characterized by uncontrolled and repetetive shopping behaviour despite leading se- vere psychological and financial consequences. It is estimated to affect approximately 5% of the population. The average age of onset is in the early 20s, and it is more common in women. There is no clear consensus on whether the disorder is an addiction or an impulse control disorder associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Psychiatric comorbidity is frequent, especially with mood disorders, anxiety disorders and other be- havioral addictions. Little is known about etiology and there are no standart treatment for shopping addiction. Large sample studies are needed to define the disorder and develop effective treatment methods.
